WTA CEO Steve Simon acknowledged in his letter to WTA Finals participants that the conditions in Cancun are not perfect. When the players arrived in Cancun early last week, the stadium construction was still ongoing. On Saturday – the day before the start of the tournament – the players had a chance to hit on the court for the first time.
After hitting and playing on the court, pretty much all participants expressed their displeasure with the court conditions. World No 1 Aryna Sabalenka was the harshest in her criticism, calling the court “unsafe” and saying that was “another level of disrespect by the WTA.” Also, Cancun’s tricky weather conditions have been another challenge to deal with.
