Wozniacki cruises to victory in first match back

Date:

Former world No.1 Caroline Wozniacki made a winning start to the second leg of her tennis career by defeating Australian qualifier Kimberly Birrell 6-2 6-2 in the first round of the Omnium Banque Nationale in Montreal.

Wearing the Adidas Fall Dress Pro, Wozniacki resumed her successful career on the Hologic WTA Tour after 1,293 days of inactivity. Playing her first match since retiring at the 2020 Australian Open and giving birth to two children, the 33-year-old needed one hour and 38 minutes to progress past the world No.115 Birrell, who was making her second career WTA 1000 main draw appearance after Indian Wells this year, where she also fell in the opening round.

This marks a spectacular beginning to Wozniacki’s comeback journey, especially given that she gave birth to her second child just nine and a half months ago. In late June she surprised the tennis world by announcing a wish to return to competition and she’s been given a wildcard for the upcoming US Open.

In the second round of the Omnium Banque Nationale, the 2010 Montreal champion Wozniacki will face either newly-crowned Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova or Egypt’s Mayar Sherif.
