It may be a Summer Olympics year, but the best figure skaters on the planet are still in action on the road to the 2026 Winter Games.
The 2024 World Figure Skating Championships are underway in Montreal, where the top men and women will compete over five days in the individual, pairs and ice dance disciplines.
While the field includes plenty of veterans, the spotlight for American fans will be on a pair of teenagers, 19-year-old two-time U.S. men’s champion Ilia Malinin and 17-year-old women’s phenom Isabeau Levito. Both will have plenty of work to do to reach the top of the podium in stacked individual fields that include a pair of two-time defending world champions from Japan, Shoma Uno and Kaori Sakamoto.
The U.S. will be favored to take gold in ice dance, however, with defending champions Madison Chock and Evan Bates back to try for a repeat.
