Alexandra Popp scored twice as Germany kicked off their World Cup campaign in dominant fashion, beating debutants Morocco 6-0 in Group H.
Klara Buhl and Lea Schuller also scored for Germany while there were two own goals, from Hanane Ait el Haj and Yasmin Mrabet.
Popp, who missed the Euro 2022 final through injury, spoke to Rapha Honigstein before the tournament and said she and her team-mates were not afraid of being one of the favourites for the tournament.
“We play for a country that has always been among the world’s elite, at men’s and women’s level,” she said. “We want to stay there and ideally, go all the way to the top (in New Zealand and Australia). It’s a positive kind of pressure to be rated as contenders again. We’ve earned that.”
Germany next face Colombia on Sunday.
