Women’s National League management committee resign after World Cup final dispute

The Women’s National League management committee have all resigned after a dispute about scheduling the season’s opening weekend on the same day as the Women’s World Cup final.

The Football Association (FA) are set to take over and help run the National League, which encompasses six divisions across tiers two and three in the women’s game.

A Women’s National League spokesperson said: “The FA Women’s National League board has regrettably accepted the resignation of the FA Women’s National League Management Committee. The board have asked The FA to put in place the necessary services to ensure that the league and the clubs are best supported as we move forward into the new season.”

The National League was criticised for scheduling the first day of the 2023-24 season for August 20, the same day as the 2023 Women’s World Cup final, with supporters setting up a petition calling for games to be moved after England reached the final.

The National League stated it had been agreed that the opening day of the season would take place on August 20 after a vote by clubs at the beginning of the month.
