The number of teams promoted from the Women’s National League to the Championship will increase from one to two from the 2023-24 season.
Relegation spots from the Championship will also increase from one to two.
The changes were recommended by the Football Association’s (FA) board and are subject to ratification by the FA Council.
The National League, the third tier in the women’s football pyramid, is split in two divisions; the Northern Premier Division and the Southern Premier Division. Previously winning the league title would not guarantee promotion, with the two league champions facing each other in a one-off, winner takes all play-off fixture at the end of the season to secure a place in the Championship.
From the 2023-24 season onwards, the winners of both the Northern Premier Division and Southern Premier Division will be promoted to the Championship.
The changes will not impact the structure of the Women’s Super League.
Wolverhampton Wanderers missed out on promotion to the Championship last season after being beaten in the National League play-off final by Southampton. After securing promotion, Southampton’s women’s football programme changed from a part-time to full-time setup.
