Women’s college basketball power rankings: UConn deserves to be in top 5 again

The NCAA revealed its top 16 seeds 11 days ago, and each of the top four teams have validated those selections by remaining undefeated in the interim despite numerous tests against ranked opponents. South Carolina, Indiana, Stanford and UConn have combined for seven ranked wins during that time, not including late-game come-from-behind victories by the Gamecocks and Huskies against Ole Miss and Creighton, respectively.

All four programs remain on track to win their conferences during the regular season — the Hoosiers have already clinched a share of the Big Ten crown for the first time in 40 years —and remain on the No. 1 line for this week’s second NCAA reveal, with Selection Sunday not too far away.

Notes on the votes

• The biggest shakeup in the top 10 this week was UConn jumping back up to No. 4. A week after I relegated the Huskies to No. 8, Caroline Ducharme returned to make that designation look a little silly. Having another offensive threat — and a sixth player who Geno Auriemma trusts — opens things up for UConn by giving Aaliyah Edwards more space to work inside and providing another shooting threat.
