Women’s college basketball midseason All-America team: Caitlin Clark headlines

Date:

Midway through the season, a few of our preseason predictions have come to fruition. Caitlin Clark continues to be the talk of the town, filling arenas and inching closer to the NCAA scoring record. LSU, though maybe not as dominant as we assumed, continues to entertain. That dominant SEC team? That would be South Carolina with its new starters and rotation, and an offense that rivals the dominance of the Gamecocks defense. The Pac-12, in its swan song, is bidding adieu like any great saga’s heroine — with fireworks and unexpected twists and turns; her fate is sealed, but she’s giving a memorable final performance.

Fueling these teams have been individual performances that prove the continued elevation of women’s basketball. Across the country, players have dazzled fans and destroyed opponents. Some of these, we expected. Others, not as much. Some of our preseason All-America votes hold true and make us look prescient while the surge from a few players — two freshmen who appear on our midseason first team, notably — has demanded their inclusion.

The Athletic’s midseason All-America teams were compiled by votes tallied Sunday night by reporters Chantel Jennings, Sabreena Merchant and Ben Pickman, and editor Shannon Ryan.
