WNBA playoff picture, standings, projections: Mercury, Storm eliminated; Fever stay alive with late comeback

Date:

There are now just two weeks remaining in the 2023 WNBA regular season, which will come to a close on Sept. 10. As expected, the defending champion Las Vegas Aces and New York Liberty have separated themselves from the pack, but there remains plenty to play for.

At the top of the standings, the Aces have set a new regular season wins record with 30, and sit in first place ahead of the Liberty, with one game remaining between the clubs. Below them, the Connecticut Sun have carved out a big gap on either side of the No. 3 seed, and are almost certain to finish there.

After that, the seeds are completely up for grabs. The Dallas Wings have created a bit of separation in the race for the No. 4 seed, but they are only two games ahead of the No. 5 Minnesota Lynx. Meanwhile, just 1.5 games separate the Lynx from the No. 8 seed Los Angeles Sparks, who themselves are clining to the final playoff spot with a 1.5 game advantage on the ninth-place Chicago Sky.

The lottery will feature the Seattle Storm and Phoenix Mercury, each of whom were eliminated on Sunday. While the Indiana Fever will likely join them this week, they staved off elimination for the time being with a thrilling comeback win over the Dream.
