WNBA opening night scores: Liberty superteam struggles in loss to Mystics; No. 1 pick Aliyah Boston debuts

The 2023 WNBA season is underway. In the first game of the evening, the Washington Mystics cruised to a surprisingly easy win over the New York Liberty, who looked totally out of sync in their first game together, in part due to the Mystics’ elite defense. Later on, the Connecticut Sun jumped out to a quick double-digit lead, and eventually held off a comeback attempt by the Indiana Fever.

Also in action are the Minnesota Lynx against the Chicago Sky, and still to come in the finale, the Phoenix Mercury visit the Los Angeles Sparks. 

There are a number of storylines to watch for, including the debut of No. 1 overall pick Aliyah Boston, the first game for the Liberty’s brand new superteam and the first official game back for Brittney Griner after she missed all of last season while detained in Russia.
