WNBA mailbag: What’s up with expansion plans? Can anyone contend with the Aces?

The second half of the WNBA season has arrived. The Las Vegas Aces have cemented their place atop the league, but beneath them lies a great deal of intrigue.

We opened the mailbag for your questions, and with the Aces as heavy favorites in 2023, a lot of the topics had an eye beyond this year. Let’s dive into thoughts on the immediate future of the league, starting with everyone’s favorite subject: expansion.

Are there any rumblings about possible expansion? There seems to be a surplus of talent, especially considering most of the players picked in the first round of the 2021 draft aren’t currently on WNBA rosters. — Alex G. N.

With all the young players coming up in future drafts, what is the real delay in adding teams? Too many quality players are not in the league now. — Annie A. 

At last year’s All-Star Game, commissioner Cathy Engelbert said she hoped the WNBA would add two more teams by no later than 2025, and she told The Athletic that the league hoped to identify one or two cities for expansion by the end of 2022, which did not happen. In December 2022, Engelbert had said that she had narrowed a list of prospective ownership groups from 20 to 10, but then told Sports Business Journal in May that she was still considering 20 cities.
