Progress is a slow process, and few sports fans know about it more than women’s basketball supporters. The discipline has been knocking at the door of mainstream media for some time now and on May 14 that knocking became louder, as we now have an extra pair of hands. And some wings. And a sword.
The Golden State franchise, which was announced in October of 2023, now has a name, a logo and, hopefully, an identity. Please welcome the Golden State Valkyries! According to the team’s press release:
The Valkyries are the first WNBA expansion team since 2008 and 13th team to join the league. Led by team president Jess Smith and GM Ohemaa Nyanin, the team is a modern interpretation of what Valkyries represent in society: bold and unapologetic women.
Asked about the development of the name and the logo, Warriors Senior Vice President of Marketing, Amanda Chin, said:
