The WNBA is about to get bigger.
USA Today’s Lindsay Schnell and Jeff Zillgitt reported on Wednesday that the league planned to announce the addition of an expansion team. On Thursday, the WNBA did just that.
The new team will land in the San Francisco Bay Area and begin play during the 2025 season.
In recent days, the WNBA’s official account on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter, had teased an expansion team in a series of tweets. On Wednesday morning, it hinted at Thursday’s announcement with a short “Coming Soon” video.

On Sept. 26, The Athletic’s Marcus Thompson II reported that the Golden State Warriors were “close” to bringing a WNBA team to the Bay Area. At that time, a deal had not yet been finalized, but a league spokesperson told Thompson that “discussions with potential new ownership groups continue to head in the right direction.”
The Warriors also released a statement, saying that they “had productive conversations with the WNBA and look forward to the possibility of being a part of the league’s expansion plans.”
