Professional women’s hoops is on its way to the Bay Area.
Future Valkyrie fans will get their first glimpse at the team’s inaugural 2025 roster this evening with the WNBA Expansion Draft set to tip off at 6:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
The newly-minted San Francisco franchise is one of three western cities—Golden State, Toronto and Portland—to receive a WNBA franchise in the next couple years. The latter are expected to join the league in 2026, while the Valkyries mark the W’s first new franchise since the Sky and Dream came along over a decade ago.

WNBA Expansion Draft results
The Valkyries will select from a designated pool of players from each current WNBA team roster. At the end of the 2024 season, each franchise submitted an official list to the league with every player the team had rights to as of the final day of the campaign.
