WNBA: Despite loss to Mercury, Sky’s playoff hopes remain alive

On Sunday against the Phoenix Mercury, the Chicago Sky showed a side of themselves that had been dormant: They can shoot the ball from beyond the arc.

Even though the Sky came up short in a competitive game, falling 93-88, it was their shooting from long range that kept them in contention. Given the vulnerability of Kamilla Cardoso, who played a limited amount of minutes due to a shoulder strain, Chicago had to rely heavily on their perimeter players. And they came through, shooting 56 percent from the 3-point line compared to the Mercury’s 37.5 percent.

It wasn’t one player doing all the work, it was five.

Chennedy Carter shot 7-for-20 from the field and 2-for-3 from the 3-point line to wind up with 20 points and four assists. Michaela Onywenwere shot 66.7 percent from the 3, while going 7-for-13 from the field. She finished with 18 points and nine rebounds, playing every minute of the game. Rachel Banham came out on fire from behind the arc en route to five total triples. She finished with 17 points and seven assists. Dana Evans came off the bench to provide some impactful play.
