There are 60 games played throughout the WNBA regular season that are part of a new feature the league is still trying out — the Commissioner’s Cup.
As part of the Commissioner’s Cup, each of the WNBA’s 12 teams play 10 games apiece — essentially the first home and road games against each of their conference opponents. When the cup ends on July 12, the top team from both the Eastern and Western Conferences will play in the third annual Commissioner’s Cup Championship.
Last year, the cup was won by the eventual league champions in Las Vegas. In its inaugural season, the cup was won by the Chicago Sky.
In addition to winning the title, a $500,000 prize pool is awarded to the victor. The championship game will take place at the home of whichever team’s win percentage is higher when compared, per the league.
This in-season tournament has no bearing on the actual playoffs and is more for entertainment, added competition, and charitable outlets.
