A major winter storm that has spread snow across Southern states this week, including the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida and Louisiana, has impacted multiple sporting events in the region.
Schools canceled classes in many areas across at least eight states, and cities such as New Orleans set snowfall records, with 10-12 inches falling in some areas. This led to several changes to the sports schedule, with potentially more to come.
Here are some of the key changes as a result of the weather.
A huge SEC women’s basketball matchup between No. 5 LSU and No. 2 South Carolina was moved to Friday, the conference announced Wednesday.
The game was originally scheduled for Thursday in Columbia, S.C., but the weather, which dumped up to a foot of snow in the Baton Rouge, Louisiana area, made travel ill-advised for the Tigers. It is expected that LSU will be able to fly out on Thursday, and the school announced that its home game on Sunday against Texas A&M remains on the schedule.
In another sign of how impactful the weather has been on the Baton Rouge area, LSU announced that its physical campus would remain closed on Thursday and advised students to stay off the roads.
