Wings acquire Diamond DeShields in blockbuster WNBA trade

Diamond DeShields is a member of the Dallas Wings following a four-team trade that included Marina Mabrey and former rookie of the year Michaela Onyenwere.

The Sky reloaded with Mabrey, after losing Candace Parker, Courtney Vandersloot and Azura Stevens in free agency. They also received Phoenix’s second-round draft pick next year. But they also traded away two first round picks, one in 2023 and one in 2024, as well as the right to swap first round picks with Dallas.

That means that in addition to DeShields, Dallas received two first round picks and a potential higher first rounder in 2025.

“We cannot wait to welcome Marina into the Chicago Sky family,” Sky general manager and coach James Wade said. “Adding a player such as Marina who can play both guard positions, is a talented sharpshooter and gives her all every single game will all be vital for our team this year. We are looking forward to having her as a big addition to our roster.”

New York, who has acquired a number of big-name stars this offseason, sent Onyenwere to Phoenix in return for the rights to Leonie Fiebich from Chicago and the Sky’s second-round pick next year.
