Venus Williams was back on the grass for her 24th Wimbledon. She has won five of the nine women’s singles finals she has reached at the All England Club, with her last title coming in 2008. Her hunt for No. 6 ended on Day 1.
Williams, who is ranked 554th in the world, lost in straight sets to Elina Svitolina in the first round. The 43-year-old Williams faced an uphill battle; Svitolina is 28 and ranked 75th. The Ukrainian was once ranked No. 3 in the world.
Novak Djokovic is at Wimbledon, too. The world men’s No. 2 is coming off a win in the final of the French Open, his record 23rd major singles title. The Serb cruised past 67th-ranked Pedro Cachín of Argentina in the first round.
The highest-ranked players coming into The Championships are men’s No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz of Spain and women’s No. 1 Iga Swiatek of Poland. Alcaraz is the second favorite on the men’s side, behind Djokovic, while Swiatek is favored to win the women’s title, according to BetMGM.
