Why was there no goal-line technology for Arsenal’s Women’s Champions League game?

Goal-line technology (GLT) came to the forefront after Arsenal’s 1-0 Champions League quarter-final first leg defeat to Bayern Munich.

The match, played at Bayern’s Allianz Arena, went ahead without GLT which Arsenal head coach Jonas Eidevall addressed post-match.

“I think it’s a problem for the competition that not every game has the same level of technology in helping the officials take the right decisions,” he said.

What happened?

Eidevall’s confusion came after two Arsenal efforts were cleared off the line in the second half.

A header from Stina Blackstenius was hooked away by Saki Kumagai and a Leah Williamson shot was blocked by Lea Schuller.

Neither attempt appeared to clearly cross the line, but there was no use of technology to confirm.

Why was there no goal-line technology available?

UEFA have since confirmed that GLT is at the discretion of the clubs with the hosts of the game footing the bill.

Article 37 of UEFA’s Regulations of the Women’s Champions League also states: “If the home club has a FIFA certified GLT system at the stadium and wishes to use it for the match, it must obtain the visiting club’s consent and UEFA’s approval via the official GLT approval process communicated by UEFA.
