Lauren James had been one of the breakout stars of the 2023 Women’s World Cup after some inspired performances during the group stage, not least during England’s 6-1 win over China.
However, the 21-year-old endured a moment of ignominy in the Lionesses’ Round of 16 match against Nigeria in Brisbane on August 7.
During the second half of the match, James was sent off for violent conduct after an incident involving Michelle Alozie. The referee initially awarded a yellow card but changed the decision following a VAR review.
The incident drew comparisons with David Beckham’s infamous red card at the 1998 World Cup in a match against Argentina. Former England striker Gary Lineker described James’ action as “a Beckhamesque moment of madness”.
