Splashy Hire: Landon Donovan returns to coaching

There will be a new face on the sideline when the San Diego Wave takes on Santa Fe FC in the CONCACAF W Champions Cup tonight (10 p.m. ET). It’s a face you’ll definitely recognize, especially if you’re from SoCal.

Landon Donovan is one of the greatest men’s soccer players in U.S. history, and now he can add interim head coach of the Wave to his resume. Donovan, who was born about 40 miles outside of Los Angeles, has played and coached for multiple teams in Southern California. His accomplishments include:

  • Six MLS Cups with the Galaxy, including two with David Beckham.
  • MLS assists record — the league’s MVP award is named in his honor.
  • USMNT’s assists record, and he tied Clint Dempsey for most goals in team history.
  • goal against Algeria in the 2010 men’s World Cup that will live forever in the history books.
