Emma Raducanu was ranked at No 85 in the world when she last played in Stuttgart but she will be returning with a protected ranking of 103 after appearing in Madrid’s main draw before withdrawing from the tournament, as explained by Stuart Fraser of The Times.
On April 18th, Raducanu exited Stuttgart in the first round after Jelena Ostapenko handed her a 6-2 6-1 loss. A week later, Raducanu went to Madrid for a WTA 1000 tournament, where she reached the round-of-16 in 2022. In Madrid, Raducanu appeared in the main draw but ended up withdrawing from the tournament just before her first-round match.
Raducanu was paid the Madrid first-round money but she also dropped to No 103 after failing to defend her 2022 Madrid points.
Raducanu’s protected ranking is not No 85 (her position after her last match in Stuttgart) as WTA rules state that it is after the last event in which a player received prize money.
