Liverpool host Manchester United in the Premier League on December 17 in one of the most bitter rivalries in the top division of English football.
Jurgen Klopp’s side started the latest matchweek at the top of the table, 10 points above Erik ten Hag’s struggling United, who suffered the ignominy of being dumped out of European competition this week after losing 1-0 at home to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League.
Ten Hag’s first visit to Anfield as United manager in March this year ended in a humiliating 7-0 defeat, and with injuries and suspensions robbing him of potentially as many as 13 first-team players for Sunday’s game, United fans are fearing the worst.
Discipline in such a match is often of paramount importance and United will certainly not want to risk the wrath of the referee amid a hostile Anfield environment. Liverpool have also suffered a little in that regard this season — they have already received four red cards in the top flight in 2023/24 — so the officials on the pitch and in the VAR facility will likely have plenty to occupy their time.
