Looking to lick their wounds from the 2023 Women’s World Cup disappointment, the U.S. women’s national team will hope to channel legends of the past as they go back to the drawing board to regroup and reestablish themselves as the world’s most preeminent women’s program.
Having won the Women’s World Cup in 2015 and 2019, the U.S. women were gunning to become the first team in football history to win three consecutive World Cups, but fell well short as they were eliminated in the quarterfinals.
Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe are in the twilight of their careers, and while the U.S. has plenty of young goalscoring talent coming through the ranks, those two will be missed as they are phased out, their place among the nation’s greats secure.

The record for all-time career goals with the U.S. national team is Abby Wambach, who played from 2001 to 2015, scoring 184 goals in 255 appearances.
Wambach’s mark is 26 more than anyone else on the list, ahead of legends Mia Hamm and Carli Lloyd, who round out the top three.
