After falling from their perch in last summer’s Women’s World Cup, the United States women have a chance to emphatically return themselves to the top of the pecking order as they take on Brazil in the 2024 Olympic gold medal match.
The USWNT has won four gold medals in Olympic women’s soccer history, three more than any other nation, but have gone two straight without even reaching the final. New head coach Emma Hayes has breathed new life in to the attacking “trident” of Sophia Smith, Trinity Rodman, and Mallory Swanson who have three goals each at the Olympics to bring this side to the precipice of reestablishing itself atop the women’s football landscape.
Brazil, meanwhile, have never won Olympic gold, meaning triumph here would be an incredible storybook finish to the legendary career of 38-year-old forward Marta, who will retire from international football after this match.
A red card in the final group match threatened to send Marta’s career out on a sour note, as she was suspended for both the quarterfinals and semifinals, but her teammates managed to engineer two massive upsets against hosts France and reigning Women’s World Cup champions Spain to give the legendary superstar one more shot at glory.
