Round of 16 action at the Women’s World Cup continues, as 2019 finalists Netherlands will look to progress to the quarterfinals over surprise team South Africa.
The Netherlands emerged from a tough group featuring the team that defeated them in the 2019 final (USA). However, they surpassed expectations and topped Group E, thanks in large part to a 7-0 win over Vietnam in their final group match.
South Africa were not expected to qualify from Group G, and things were looking ominous after an opening match loss to Sweden was followed by a draw against Argentina as they blew a two-goal lead.
But a 92nd minute winner in South Africa’s final group game against Italy saw Banyana Banyana win their first-ever match at the World Cup, and qualify for the knockout rounds at the expense of Italy.
It will be a tall order to repeat the trick against a Netherlands side growing in confidence and with a strong defence in tow.
