What’s Going on With the USWNT? Previewing the Showdown Against Sweden

The 2023 World Cup has to go down in history as the chaos cup. Never before have these many favorites lost games to underdogs and failed to advance out of the group stage. Brazil, Germany, Canada, and Italy are all going home. The USWNT was a bit more fortunate than the other teams mentioned. On a different day Portugal’s shot off the post would’ve sent the USWNT home. Yet, their goal to win five stars is still alive no matter how bleak it might seem. Something has been off with this team. They aren’t quite in sync and haven’t created as much offensively as we’ve come to expect. Can they turn it around in time to beat Sweden? What’s going on with the USWNT? Concerns

The first thing that stands out about the USWNT is their inability to finish over the first three games. As a team they racked up 63 shots but only 17 were on target and four of those ended up as goals. Those numbers indicate that this team has dealt with a combination of wasteful finishing but also fewer goalkeeping mistakes against them.
