Seventeen years after he first attended FIFA’s annual awards gala, holder Lionel Messi won the Best Men’s Player prize again.
Then at Barcelona, Messi was a 20-year-old whose country, Argentina, had not won a major trophy for 14 years at the time.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner was part of a typically stellar cast from across the sport receiving the results from London. Messi was up against fellow finalists Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland for the 2023 prize, which was handed out on January 15, 2024.
Ballon d’Or Feminin winner Aitana Bonmati won the Best FIFA Women’s Player, competing with Linda Caicedo and Jenni Hermoso.
Pep Guardiola and Sarina Wiegman won the top coaching prizes, while the FIFA Puskas Award, honouring the best goal scored in the past year, was also be given out.
