The concept of the Royal Rumble match started in 1988 thanks to the legendary Pat Patterson. The match continues to live on through the Royal Rumble event, with this year’s event on January 27. In Tampa, Florida, it airs on Peacock in the U.S.
As the name suggests, the event features two (a men’s and women’s) Royal Rumble matches, featuring 30 stars. The point is to throw everyone else over the top rope to the bottom of the floor. The last person in the middle of the ring in both Rumble matches earns an opportunity at a world title at WrestleMania 40 in April.
Last year’s winners were Rhea Ripley and Cody Rhodes.
