Both No. 24 UNC and No. 17 UConn are coming off big wins over middling opponents, and they now face off in a marquee clash of top-24 teams in the Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase.
The Tar Heels (6-3) beat UNC Greensboro, 81-66, on Wednesday thanks to six 3-pointers from guard Lexi Donarski. The Huskies, meanwhile, cruised past Ball State in a 90-63 win behind a big night from Aaliyah Edwards, Ashlynn Shade and Paige Bueckers to improve to 5-3. That trio combined for 50 points on 20-of-34 field goal attempts.
The key to this matchup will be UConn’s offense vs. UNC’s defense. The Huskies average 77.6 points, but the Tar Hells allow just 55.6 points per game. However, UConn is 5-3 when they’ve scored more than 56 points in a contest, and the team’s duo of Bueckers and Edwards averages nearly 30 points per game combined.
Tar Heel leading scoring Deja Kelly is as consistent as they come on offense for UNC. She averages 16.1 points per game and had eight assists in UNC’s win over UNG. But the Tar Heels will need more than Kelly’s play to upset the Huskies.
