The top two teams in the Big East square off this weekend between the UConn Huskies and the St. John’s Red Storm.
Both sides enter Saturday’s clash on winning streaks: UConn has won nine consecutive games, while St. John’s has won three in a row.
The Huskies are led by senior duo Paige Bueckers and Aaliyah Edwards. Bueckers averages 18.9 points (third in the Big East), 4.4 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game, while Edwards averages 16.7 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. Similarly, the Red Storm have two seniors leading their side, with Unique Drake and Jillian Archer. Drake averages 19.6 points (second in the Big East), while Archer averages 11.0 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.
UConn is reeling a bit, though, after the team announced that senior Aubrey Griffin would miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL. She averaged 9.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. Griffin is the third Huskies player to suffer a season-ending injury after Azzi Fudd also tore her ACL, Jana El Alfy ruptured her Achilles, and Ayanna Patterson has patellar tendonitis.
