Top-seeded Texas has the look of a potential national champion and faces a tough matchup against No. 8 Alabama in the second round of the 2024 NCAA women’s tournament Sunday.

The Longhorns rolled past Drexel in the opener Friday. Texas has won 13 of its last 14 games. 

Shaylee Gonzales led the Longhorns with 21 points, going 5-of-6 from the 3-point line. Taylor Jones scored 18 points, while DeYona Gaston recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. 

Madison Booker finished with 14 assists, setting a program record for assists in an NCAA Tournament game. Booker is the first Longhorns player to record 14 or more assists since Angie Jo Ogletree had 15 against Houston on Jan. 29, 1994.

Alabama advanced with a hard-fought, 82-74 victory over No. 9 Florida State on Friday,

Essence Cody led the Crimson Tide with a career-high in points (20) and rebounds (14) — her third double-double of the season.

Alabama earned its first since 2021 when the Crimson Tide beat North Carolina, 80-71, in the first round.
