South Carolina is still on a path of destruction, heading into the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 with a 34-0 record.
Both head coach Dawn Staley and Aliyah Boston have been named Naismith Finalists, Staley for Coach of the Year and Boston for Player of the Year.
The Gamecocks won their first two tournament games by landslides, their most recent victory against No. 8 South Florida being a 31-point difference, 76-45. In said game, Boston recorded her 81st career double-double and Zia Cooke scored 21 points. It was Staley’s 400th career win in her 14th season.
UCLA managed to catch fire in the final quarter against No. 5 seed Oklahoma, with Charisma Osborne recording a career-high 36 points. She was perfection from the free throw line, going 12-for-12. Fun fact: UCLA men’s guard Tyger Campbell did the exact same thing, same number of attempts and completions, on March 18 in the Bruins’ win over Northwestern.
The Bruins and Gamecocks met earlier this season on Nov. 29, South Carolina coming away with the win 73-64 thanks to a double-double by Boston that helped the Gamecocks rally from a 10-point deficit.
