West Ham’s Hawa Cissoko targeted with racist, Islamophobic abuse on social media

Date:

West Ham United Women defender Hawa Cissoko has again been subject to online racist abuse.

Cissoko, 25, shared a series of messages, which contained racist, misogynistic and Islamophobic insults, on her Instagram story.

The France international captioned the screenshot with: “I thought we were done with this story. Obviously not”.

Cissoko was previously subject to racist abuse following her red card against Aston Villa in the WSL in October.

On that occasion, West Ham said they had reported the abuse to the police and relevant social media companies.

Speaking to The Athletic in January in a wide-ranging interview, Cissoko said on racist abuse: “I prefer to work at McDonald’s and be happy and no one is abusing me than being abused but can’t even defend myself.

“That’s the worst thing. Just because I play football I have to be quiet.”

The Athletic has contacted the Metropolitan Police, Meta — which owns Instagram — and West Ham for comment.
