WBB: Duquesne’s Paige Cannon on being Maltese League Player of the Year

Paige Cannon, a 6-foot-1 forward, has just completed her season for the Starlites, playing in the basketball league of Malta, the 10th-smallest country in the world. Her per game averages for the season were 18.2 points, 11.9 rebounds and 3.4 assists, the best of her professional career, and the main reason why she was named the 2024 Maltese League Player of the Year.

Congrats on being named the Maltese League Player of the Year. Was this the best season of your career so far?

Thank you for the congratulations! This season has been my best season statistically, so far.

What is the state of women’s basketball in Malta? European fans can be very passionate about their teams. Are fans in Malta similar?

The league is small but most of the teams are very competitive and the fans are great. They are very passionate about their team and it makes the atmosphere very exciting.

You’ve played in Malta this year, and on Madera Island for two seasons. Not counting that one season in Sweden, how do you manage to focus on basketball while living in some of Europe’s top summer destinations?
