Washington stays undefeated to earn NCAA women’s basketball team of the week

With a win over Saint Mary’s (California) on Saturday, the Washington Huskies improved to 11-0 on the season to match their best start to a season in program history, earning NCAA.com Team of the Week honors.

The last time that the Huskies opened a season with 11 straight wins came during the 1976-77 season, with the win streak tied for the third longest in program history, matching the same accomplished during the 2016-17 season. On Monday, Washington entered the Associated Press Top 25 poll for the first time since 2017, coming in at No. 23.

In the 64-32 home win over Saint Mary’s, defense and a balanced attack led the way. The 32 points were the second-fewest points the Huskies have allowed an opponent so far this season, and the fewest points the Gaels have scored in program history. The 24.5 percent field goal percentage by Saint Mary’s was the fifth time this season the Washington defense has held an opponent to under 30%.
