The road to the NWSL Championship is dwindling down, but there’s still plenty of soccer to be played. That includes a matchup between the Spirit and Gotham in the semifinals.
Washington hosts the reigning champions from New York with a trip to the title game on the line. Not only that, but it’s a matchup between some of the best players in the league, including Rose Lavelle, Jess Carter, Trinity Rodman and Ouleymata Sarr. While the teams could face off in the championship match themselves, only one can advance.
Their meeting comes after two exciting wins in the quarterfinals. Gotham beat Portland 2-1 with goals by Lavelle and Tierna Davison, while the Spirit used extra time to beat Bay FC 2-1 thanks to a goal by Tara McKeown and an own-goal by Caprice Dydasco in the 96th minute.
Saturday’s match will be nothing short of intense as both squads are prepared to go the distance. For visiting Gotham, it will be an uphill battle. Washington got the best of NJ/NY in both regular season meetings with two 2-0 victories. Can the defending NWSL Champions keep their foot on the gas and continue their run for the repeat?
