Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry was named the 2022-23 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Social Justice Champion, the NBA announced Tuesday. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Curry was recognized for his work in voter registration and education and for providing opportunities to underrepresented groups. He served as co-chair of former First Lady Michelle Obama’s “When We All Vote” initiative and worked for the National Basketball Social Justice Coalition’s “Freedom to Vote,” a program to advocate for the Freedom to Vote Act.
  • Curry’s lifestyle brand, Underrated, provides access to college recruiters, sports agents and other industry leaders for underrepresented groups along with scholarships and personal development. His Unanimous Media multimedia company works with underrepresented filmmakers, creators and writers across the entertainment industry.
  • His Eat. Learn. Play. nonprofit, co-founded with his wife Ayesha, has provided over 2 million meals and 500,000 books to Oakland, Calif., students.
