The women’s Western Athletic Conference tournament will begin Wednesday with first set of games between UT Arlington and Southern Utah, plus Abilene Christian vs. Tarleton State.
Eight of the 11 members of the WAC conference are invited to the tournament. The teams not to the WAC conference tournament on the women’s side were Seattle, UT Rio Grande Valley and Utah Valley.
If an ineligible team wins the WAC tournament, the conference’s automatic bid will go to the highest seeded tournament-eligible team. Tarleton and Utah Tech are ineligible for the NCAA tournament, but they will play in the WAC conference tournament.
Last season, Southern Utah earned the conference tournament championship title plus the NCAA tournament bid. They defeated California Baptist, 82-73. This season, Southern Utah is the last seed in the tournament. If they win, they’ll be the first team since New Mexico State in 2017 to repeat as WAC conference tournament champions.
California Baptist is the top seed this season, fresh off an impressive 18-2 conference record from the regular season. They lost only to Utah Valley and Abilene Christian.
