Virginie Viard is to depart Chanel as creative director. We repeat: Virginie Viard is to depart Chanel as creative director. The French designer (who recently turned 62) has been the creative force behind Chanel since 2019, following the passing of the late Karl Lagerfeld.
The unexpected news comes after the house of Chanel praised Virginie Viard, following reports revenue increased 16% to a staggering $19.7 billion in 2023. Chanel ultimately benefited from higher prices and encountered strong demand for its ready-to-wear and accessories. It was in 1985 when Viard first began her career at Chanel, as an intern for haute couture embroidery. Viard’s most recent collection for Cruise 2025 was staged in the port city of Marsielle in Southern France and is set to present her Fall 2024 Haute Couture collection as planned at the Opéra Garnier, during the upcoming Haute Couture Paris Fashion Week festivities on June 25.
A replacement is set to be announced in due course. Stay tuned.
