NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The No. 6 Virginia women’s tennis team (9-2) picked up a 4-2 victory at No. 21 Notre Dame (8-3) on Friday (Feb. 23) at the Eck Tennis Pavilion in Notre Dame, Ind.
The Cavaliers won the doubles point and picked up victories on singles courts three, five and six. Grad student Natasha Subhash clinched the victory for the Cavaliers in their ACC opener.
Sophomore Annabelle Xu and senior Sara Ziodato opened the match with a 6-3 win on the third doubles court. Juniors Mélodie Collard and Elaine Chervinsky clinched the point with a 7-5 win on the top court.
In singles, Chervinsky sailed through a 6-2, 6-1 win on court five to give the Cavaliers a 2-0 lead. The Irish picked up a straight-set win at two to make it 2-1. Collard, who had battled to a 12-10 win in the tiebreaker to decide her first set against Akari Matsuno on six, won her second set 6-4 to give UVA the 3-1 lead. Notre Dame won in three sets on four to make it 3-2, but Subhash closed out a three-setter against Yashna Yellayi, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 to clinch the victory.
