CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Good luck getting Elizabeth Kitley to talk about herself.
Not happening. Now a senior at Virginia Tech, the figurative and literal centerpiece of the Hokies’ program, the 6-foot-6 sensation is savvy — or sane — enough not to gush about her own comings and goings. Teammates? Best in the world. Coach Kenny Brooks? Same sorta praise. But herself, or her accolades, or her dauntingly long list of accomplishments?
Lips zipped shut.
“If you go up to her right now and start talking to her about her accolades,” says Virginia Tech guard Georgia Amoore, “she’ll probably groan. She doesn’t like it — at all.”
That’s fine. Let Kitley keep quiet. The rest of us still have plenty to say. And how could we not? Kitley is among the best players in the nation, the reigning ACC Player of the Year. She earned All-America nods and dropped 42 points in Virginia Tech’s lone NCAA Tournament game. If you’re rating the caliber of centers nationwide, she’s on the shortlist, if not atop it.
And yet … Virginia Tech finished tied for third in the ACC. Didn’t win the conference tournament, either. Got upset by No. 12 seed Florida Gulf Coast in the first round of March Madness, casting a cloud of sorts over one of the best seasons in program history. How do you…
