Vancouver to host UFC 289 on June 10; Main event still TBD

The UFC is heading back to Canada for the first time in nearly four years.

Vancouver will be the host to the UFC 289 pay-per-view event on June 10, the promotion announced Friday afternoon.

UFC president Dana White told Canadian broadcast partner TSN a bantamweight trilogy title fight between Amanda Nunes and Julianna Peña will headline UFC 289 on June 10.

Peña (11-5) scored a historic upset against Nunes (22-5) the first time they met in December 2021 in Las Vegas. After rocking Nunes with punches throughout the second round, Peña forced the two-weight champion to tap to a rear-naked choke, snapping a 12-fight win streak.

Nunes, of Brazil, reclaimed the 135-pound title in an immediate rematch seven months later in Dallas. Nunes dominated all five rounds of the matchup, recording final judges scores of 50-45, 50-44 and 50-43. Neither bantamweight has fought at all since that second meeting in July.

Nunes still actively holds both the bantamweight and featherweight championships, although she hasn’t fought at featherweight in more than two years. She is the No. 1 pound-for-pound female fighter in the world, according to ESPN.
