Valkyries shock fans by cutting former South Carolina and UConn stars

Date:

It didn’t take long for the Golden State Valkyries’ fanbase to develop some favorite players.

Two of them won’t be on the inaugural roster for the WNBA’s newest competitor.

The Valkyries announced their first 12-player team, and it doesn’t include Laeticia Amihere or Kaitlyn Chen.

Amihere was the biggest shock after she put up 20 points in 19 minutes of a preseason game against the Los Angeles Sparks.

She was a 2023 first-round pick by the Atlanta Dream out of South Carolina and made 60 percent of her shots in the preseason.

Chen was solid in the preseason, too, although not as much of a shoo-in.

The point guard was the 30th pick in this year’s WNBA Draft, a much tougher position to make a roster from.

Chen played at Princeton before finishing her college career at Connecticut. From the Bay Area, she added a hometown feel to the Valkyries but won’t get to suit up for them in the regular season.

The Valkyries also don’t yet have first-round pick Juste Joctye with the team yet while she remains in Europe to play with the Lithuania national team at EuroBasket in June.
