The final roster of the year for the U.S. women’s national team is in, with interim coach Twila Kilgore naming 26 players for the last camp of 2023. The team will play two friendlies against China PR; first in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Dec. 2 before heading to Frisco, Texas, on Dec. 5.
December’s roster is a big shakeup compared to the rest of the year, with Kilgore electing to give some of the veterans time off and bring in more new names for evaluation. The group includes NWSL Rookie of the Year Jenna Nighswonger of Gotham FC and Korbin Albert from PSG, as well as a return for some players who haven’t been around in a while, like center back Abby Dahlkemper and NWSL goalkeeper of the year Jane Campbell.
Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, defenders Crystal Dunn and Becky Sauerbrunn, midfielders Andi Sullivan and Ashley Sanchez, and forward Alex Morgan are all among the players with a little extra rest now following the conclusion of the NWSL season — maybe not bad timing considering some of them will be testing the market in NWSL free agency. Kilgore’s quote in the news release is a reminder to not take this as any sort of statement about these veterans losing their place in the overall player pool.
