Free agents and USWNT stalwarts Rose Lavelle and Emily Sonnett are in advanced discussions to sign with Gotham FC ahead of the 2024 season, according to sources briefed on negotiations who were not authorized to speak publicly before a formal announcement is made. No paperwork has been signed at this time, according to sources.
Free agent and fellow USWNT veteran Crystal Dunn has also been linked to Gotham FC, with CBS Sports reporting earlier this month that Orlando Pride, Washington Spirit and Gotham are all interested in signing her. The Athletic later reported that the Pride were no longer in contention for Dunn despite making a “significant offer.”
If Gotham was able to sign two or even all three of those free agents, it would be seen as a major leveling up of a roster that won the 2023 NWSL Championship.
A spokesperson for Gotham FC could not be reached on Monday night.
Gotham has lost players this offseason; captain Ali Krieger to retirement, and two players in trades for expansion draft protection from incoming NWSL clubs Utah Royals FC and Bay FC (goalkeeper Mandy Haught and defender Ellie Jean). Gotham also acquired an extra $150,000 in allocation money in their trade with Utah for Haught.
