Chelsea hope to have United States international Naomi Girma available for their Subway Cup final against Manchester City on March 15.
Girma made her first Chelsea appearance last Sunday since joining for a world-record $1.1million (£890,000) fee from San Diego Wave in January. The 24-year-old started the 2-2 Women’s Super League (WSL) draw against Brighton & Hove Albion but was taken off after 59 minutes due to injury.
Girma appeared to suffer a left calf injury and Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor said immediately after the game that the defender would need to be assessed.
Bompastor gave a further update on Girma and fellow January signing Keira Walsh, who joined Chelsea from Barcelona, when speaking at a pre-match news conference ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final against Crystal Palace.
“Naomi and Keira won’t be available for the game on Sunday, but we have a chance to have them next Saturday for the cup final,” Bompastor confirmed, via Chelsea’s website.
