U.S. falls dos a cero to Mexico

Those of us who stayed up last night were given a show of squad cohesion, offensive pressure and a long-range golazo. The problem for USWNT fans is that they came from the Mexican national team instead of the U.S. Having likely studied film from USWNT’s match against Argentina last week, Mexico came out with energy and pressure that the U.S. could not match and topped Group A with a 2-0 win over the U.S. Here’s how it went down:

  • 35’ – Emily Fox crossed in toward the center of the goal, getting a shot off with her right foot. Goalkeeper Esthefanny Barreras pushed the ball wide and out of danger.
  • 38’ – Mexico countered with two long balls into the attacking third. U.S. defender Becky Sauerbrunn uncharacteristically botched the clearance, placing the ball into the chest of Lizbeth Ovalle, who found her feet and chipped goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher for the opening goal.
