The U.S. is hanging on by a thread at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
In possibly their worst World Cup showing ever, the Americans clawed tooth and nail to get to the knockout round, advancing on a singular point after drawing with Portugal on Tuesday. Now, they’re scheduled to face Sweden, which has gone undefeated thus far.
It’ll be a definite challenge, and if they’re to be defeated, this would be the earliest elimination the country has ever seen in all nine editions of the tournament. The worst they’ve finished is third place, taking bronze in 1995, 2003 and 2007. The U.S. has taken home four titles, the most of any country, including the last two back-to-back.
Grab a coffee and cross your fingers Sunday morning, and maybe Vlatko Andonovski will pull out the big guns.
